This game is pretty hard, you have to mind your climb rates, angles of attack etc. so some maneuvers that where possible in BF 1942 is practically suicide ( like attacking from a very steep dive bomb run without extending the brakes, or doing a shallow dive bomb while your bomb fuse was set to detonate on impact, i had mine on a 1 sec delay so I don't catch frag when it hits, but sometimes It skips the deck of a ship and out the other side ) some of the missions are also so dam hard i ended up re-flying it over and over ( night missions without night vision, flying on instinct and instrument readout and you can barely see out the cockpit is harrowing, I'd actually pray for flak and machine gun fire so I can use it as nav reference LOL ) and don't forget to turn off the nav lights before you get to the target zone Smile

My Instrument panel was a mess, most of the gages where broken , bullet holes everywhere and top that off with ... in the 1941 to 1942 campaign parts japanese pilots did not pack chutes or didnt use them, death means the end of a campaign !

Both my landing gears where sheered off ( the Val's doesn't retract ) and my left wing aileron, flaps, & airbrakes where in bad shape, I had practically no fuel when I reached the carrier and the engine was just dyin out when I made the pancake into the deck ( wing got ripped out when the tailhook snagged without any wheels and it hit the tower LOL )

I can't seem to slow down my plane most times ( I tried using wheel brakes, airbrakes, engine kill ! ) about half the time I come in at a stupidly high rate of descent ( about 180 km/h ) with half flaps and half throttle it kinda bounces when it catches the dam arresting cable. workin it here and there whenever i got a few minutes to spare ( single mission landing 1 - moving ship ) the zero has less landing weight and lands fine, the VAL has stiff landing gear so if you don't pretty much come in at unpowered glide angle at the verge of stall yer cooked ( ever seen that video of the wildcat getting sliced in half as it came in and slammed near the bridge ? I fucking did that on a japanese plane that is nearly twice as long ! ) don't get me started on how many times I slammed into the rear of the carrier trying to get a good landing angle, and how many times i went past the bow ( including 1 particular ocassion that left my damaged plane dead in the water, I managed to bail but ....the CV ran me over DEAD )

My A6M21-N ( skin ) vs the stock ingame skin

I really did not understand why japan invested on float planes & float fighters, until I played the campaign, float planes can take off virtually from anywhere in the pacific, they can even pick up downed pilots, the float fighters where par with any fighters except in inverted dives and served well raiding and scouting, even downed a few F2Fs and SBDs, they do not require a runway and can operate in small islands that are generally too small to support a runway, they are great commerce raiders, and when launched from an oyodo or chitose or even ise/ hyuga they can be recovered later or they can vector to a resupply point somewhere and come back later allowing the ship 'roam time' regardless of where their planes are heading. so really, it's a nice feature campaign.

its kind of why i like float planes in 1942, you can land them virtually anywhere you have water and even sometimes on land if your good enough, ill get IL2 again and we will all do a mission sometime.

After nearly 10 minutes of constant battle with the same opponent I managed to sheer off the tail with my 20mm explosive cannons when he over shot my less maneuverable plane.

The CV heaved up on a wave while I was taking off, and it pancaked me off the tip of the deck with airspeed almost barely matching the CV, and it ran me over ! i managed to jettison the payload and the fuel tank and then swim out, mission ended !

Effective floatplane strategy number 1 :

Climb High BEFORE being in combat range, sometimes this means actually ignoring the waypoint and heading away from it for a while, this allows you to dive into a fight, then dive away if needed.

Dived into a flight of unsuspecting wildcats, killed the leader ( cockpit shot with 20mm cannon ) and dived away, commanded flight 1 to engage from above while remaining wildcats chased me, wingman was engaging the trailing SBDs

Effective Floatplane Strategy Number 2 :
be an opportunistic sunovabitch ! If there is an overwhelming number of enemy planes, climb away and regroup, wait until they are vectoring back towards their carriers or home base, and engage when they are about to land, use cover ( clouds or terrain ) so you aren't spotted, remember carriers have to briefly disengage their AA batteries to let the planes land, dive in, make a kill, and scoot away low level then get elevation once they start shooting ( AA guns have to be locked into elevation and diection to fire ) change direction or elevation to avoid most of the gunfire. and don't worry about running out of fuel, a floatplane can end it's mission simply by landing at sea as far away as possible from enemy ships ( presumably a floatplane tender or carrier can pick you up ?! )

LOL this wildcat's HVAR rockets on the right wing pylon exploded when I ambushed it out of the clouds on the floatplane last night, I then did the evil thing and shot the pilot after another passed shortly after he deployed the chute. I bare was able to power out of there because this guy was cruising @ mil speed 9 82 % throtle ) and I came down at near 450 km/h and slammed the flaps out @ 1% power after I nosed into his tail ( he sheered off my main float and fuel was cut to half but he lost his rudder in the process, and I was able to land it back at the base )

Well I was bored yesterday so I made me a nifty mission based on the IJN's last sortie towards Iwo Jima but with time constraints I made it a bit shorter flight, and I made it for single mission using the the A6M-N floatplane, mission is to act as scout for the BBs I scriptd a simulated catapult launch and a flight of 3 separate scout planes from 3 BBs there are many things going on in the map so I decided to include static cameras in there if you just wanna land that scout plane and watch Very Happy ( shift F2 to cycle through ) I will be posting the actual mission files for people with the game to enjoy once I finish fixing a few problems ( namely too much AA going on somewhere )
